Transparent stamp PNG: white, black or checkerboard background?
Distinguish a viewer backdrop from a changed file. Check the original PNG, insert it into a document and preserve transparency when sharing or printing.

The essentials in three steps
- A white or black viewer backdrop does not by itself mean transparency was lost.
- Use Save PNG on the result page, not a preview screenshot.
- Place the original over a coloured document background to distinguish a real white rectangle from a viewer backdrop.
1Transparency lets the content underneath show
PNG can carry transparency, but a .png extension alone does not guarantee it. The file must contain transparent pixels and the viewer must display them. White or black can simply be the viewer’s backdrop.
2Separate preview markings from the final file
Stampng previews have a visible watermark and opaque background. The final PNG has no visible watermark and a transparent background. The checkerboard on the result page is a display aid; a screenshot can capture it as part of a new image.
3How to test for a real white rectangle
- Find the original downloaded PNG, not a screenshot or a copy converted to JPG.
- Create a coloured shape or background in a document and insert the PNG above it as a picture.
- If the underlying colour shows around the stamp, transparency remains. If a white rectangle covers it, download a fresh original and compare.
4Sharing and conversion can change the file
Screenshots or saving against a white layer can flatten transparency. Where possible, send the original as a file/document attachment and test the received file too. Messaging apps handle files differently, so no transfer method is universal.
5Transparency and sharpness are different
The current web download is a 512×512-pixel PNG, not a vector. Enlarging it does not add detail. Resize proportionally, inspect the saved PDF and test-print when needed. Compression, physical size and printer settings affect the result.
